The risks of radon

The risks of radon

Radon represents a real health risk. In Switzerland, the Federal Office of Public Health (OFSP) has identified radon as the second risk factor for lung cancer after tobacco. Radon is a natural radioactive gas that is released into the air from certain soils. Switzerland is particularly affected by radon because of its geology.

To find out if your area is affected by radon risk, you can check the radon map by clicking on this link to the Confederation's website.

Radon emits alpha radiation that is far more harmful to health than X-rays or gamma rays.

Radon enters houses through microcracks in the foundation slabs and the joints… it then finds itself sealed in a home, with its concentration gradually increasing until it reaches a critical threshold for health. This is even more true for newly constructed buildings with excellent insulation that literally traps radon in the house. People are therefore exposed to radiation dangerous for their health.

Radon is an odorless and colorless gas, and while it is not detectable by our senses it is however easy to measure the levels of radon with a specific test. The solution to a radon problem is to know how to eliminate the indoor air pollutants of which it is part.

It is even more essential to seek to eliminate air pollutants and their health risk if your home has a moisture problem.

We explain why humidity and indoor air pollution are a dangerous combination.
